Summary of article 'Perks that Work' (Readings Booklet pg 37)

PERKS THAT WORK
by Robert Bourke

According to Burke in his article “Perks that Work”, as there are very few unemployed people in contemporary society, companies are beginning to use different strategies to keep their workers. His article outlines some of those strategies. For example, many companies offer extra benefits to employees including more money, better perks and help with personal problems.
Some large technology companies even go so far as to give their employees generous perks such as luxury cars and cruises. One critic, Doherty, argues that benefits are good for employees but not for companies, as they do not increase profits. Burke then continues by giving other strategies for increasing employee motivation and loyalty.
The general manager of Gateway in the US Tim Haval, says that another way to keep workers is to develop their sense of belonging, which then makes it hard for them to leave. Tyler, the founder and CEO of Xperts, highlights that the effect of perks on the profits of a company and its shareholders is unknown, because benefits focus on employees. He points out another strategy for keeping workers is to help them with personal problems, so flexible leave is very valuable for them.
Burke concludes that if employees achieve a work/life balance and are happy at work, they will not look elsewhere for employment.
